I’d wake up every day and go sweep the same hallway with 20 other people. That teaches you that your labor is redundant and worthless. Later, I became a teaching assistant and it was a radical change to walk into that classroom and be the only TA. The tutoring program was successful until the prison teachers union went to Albany and got it shut down because ‘we were taking their jobs.’

Prison slavery is not making this country safer, it’s not making people healthier. If we are against slavery, we have to be against it in its entirety. For me ending the exception would be a step towards restoring some humanity to incarcerated people all over this country.
