Massachusetts

Organizing workers was strictly prohibited. If we agree as a populace not to go to work, they lock down prisons. Nobody gets phone calls, nobody gets showers. And you can’t leave your cell. They use shakedowns and searches, just to see men, mostly brown bodies lined up, being inspected and surveyed by a force of white males. It’s an image that I could never get out of my head.

When slaves were freed, they had to get travel permits from their masters. It’s the same with me. I have to walk around with a travel permit anytime I leave Massachusetts.
